David Opela grew up in Ostrava, Czechoslovakia. Starting in 5th grade, he participated in, and later organized various math competitions and camps. He won the Czech Math Olympiad in 1996 and earned a bronze medal at that year's IMO in Mumbai, India. He continued studying mathematics (focusing on functional analysis) for the next 10 years at Charles University in Prague and later at Washington University in St. Louis. In August 2006, he moved to New York to join D. E. Shaw & Co., L.P.* as a quantitative analyst. David has been teaching Math-M-Addicts since 2012.
