Community Code of Conduct

 

Math-M-Addicts New York, Inc. (“MMA”) is a non-profit dedicated to helping its students become better problem-solvers, to supporting their right to intellectual excellence, and to creating a diverse community of learners united by their passion for math.

MMA is dedicated to maintaining its programs as a community based upon mutual respect and trust. As a result, we expect and require all participants in MMA’s programs, their parents and guardians and all other members of the MMA community to exhibit a high level of personal integrity and respect towards MMA participants, as well as towards MMA’s teachers, volunteers and staff.

By participating in MMA programs, each participant as well as their parents and/or guardians, agree to abide by the guidelines described here when attending, participating in, or working on any MMA program, including remotely. MMA may change these guidelines or provide additional guidelines from time to time. In addition, instructors may require additional guidelines for their classes.

We reserve the right to suspend or expel any participant who, in our opinion, violates (or whose family members violate) any of our guidelines. Such suspension or expulsion will be final and will not entitle the participant to reapply to the program or to receive a refund for any payment previously made.


Honor Code. Participants are to never represent the ideas or words of others as their own. Participants may not destroy, alter, or appropriate the work of other participants, or impersonate other participants in any context. Unless authorized by MMA in writing, participants may neither give to others nor receive from others (including family members) unauthorized assistance with examinations or other assessments, including any entrance examination.

Property and materials. In addition to working independently and honestly, academic integrity also refers to responsibility and care for space and materials provided by the organization. Participants are required to treat shared spaces, classrooms and classroom materials with care.

Intellectual Property. Participants will receive educational and other materials which are proprietary to MMA. Participants and others should abstain from sharing MMA’s materials with any third parties. For example, participants are not permitted to remove or copy lecture notes, entrance examination, problem solutions or other materials not intended for out-of-class use.

Homework Policy. Participants must do their best to complete homework assignments and submit them on time. Participants who miss more than four classes or homework assignments may be removed from the program.  Any participant who will be absent from class must notify the teacher in advance and submit his or her homework before class starts. 

Safety. Any conduct that may or is intended to endanger the health or safety of program participants is not permitted and will not be tolerated. Participants must abstain from any such conduct.

Language and behavior. Language and actions which are inconsistent with mutual respect, which are aggressive towards others or which negatively impact the learning environment at MMA are not permitted. In addition, language and/or actions that are intended to or that tend to socially isolate, label or otherwise demean a participant or another member of our community or staff are similarly not permitted. Use of any form of social media or electronic communication to intimidate, scare, demean, attack or otherwise bully participants, other members of our community or staff is not permitted.

Disruptive Conduct. Participants are expected to pay attention and avoid distractions during classes, either online or in-person.  In particular, students should not disrupt others or be involved in any kind of chat while class is in session unless permitted by the instructor.

Audio and video recordings. Members of the community are not permitted to record any class or segment of class, meetings, and events on site and off without prior permission granted by MMA in writing.

These guidelines apply to communications and conduct that take place both within physical walls or within electronic communities (including for remote instruction), whether during class time or at other times, whether addressed to participants, members of MMA staff, our teachers or other members of the MMA community.
